About Phoebe Academy
June 18–25, 2017
Mercy begins and ends with God. Set free from sin through the blood of Christ, the Holy Spirit drives us into the homes and lives of our neighbors to serve through mercy. Our Lord’s call to the Church still rings true, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36)
In the history of the Church, deaconesses have proved indispensable. In the early Church they were able to engage a hostile world through ministry to women, children, the poor, slaves and the sick. Our contemporary circumstances cry out for deaconesses, through whom the Church can engage the secular age with a concrete, incarnate and public ministry of mercy and charity.
Deaconesses embody God’s mercy by promoting the bonds of love within the fellowship of the Church. They give concrete expression to the love of Christ in their service to the sick, the elderly, the weak and the community as a whole.
Phoebe Academy provides an opportunity for high school women to explore the vocation of deaconess in the Church from a theological perspective. The event teaches what preparation for service within The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod entails. Attendees are given the opportunity to learn how women can serve our neighbors both within and outside the Church.
